Strawberries Galore

It is prime strawberry season here in Tennessee and I have been enjoying it immensely. We got some strawberries from a lovely little patch in a small town near our home. We went a little crazy and picked a whole flat of strawberries. They are so sweet that they can be eaten without any sugar needed. However, two people can not eat that many strawberries before they start to go bad so I have been baking and canning strawberries up a storm. I made 6 pints of strawberry freezer jam, 3 pints of strawberry syrup, strawberry cinnamon rolls, and a strawberry and chocolate chip cake (recipes will be at the end). I didn’t leave my fur babies out of the strawberry fest either, I made them peanut butter and strawberry popsicles, and some strawberry banana dog biscuits.

My first foray into strawberry freezer jam did not go as planned. The first batch turned out very sugary, and not very jelly like. The second batch turned out amazing though. I believe I did not let the Sure Jell boil long enough in the first batch. Strawberry freezer jam is an easy recipe that makes your family believe you are a culinary genius. If strawberry freezer jam is easy, strawberry sauce is easier. You just combine your ingredients in a sauce pan and let them simmer for a bit, and then blend it all up. The sauce is a great consistency and is sweet, but not that tooth achingly sweet that most sauces are. We use it for pancakes (pairs perfectly with chocolate chip pancakes), ice cream, and yogurt. It goes well with many different things. It is also great as a gift, it has impressed everyone I gave a jar to. In fact, I have been asked to make many more. I made the strawberry chocolate chip cake for a cake auction at our church and boy, was it a hit. It didn’t even make it home with the couple that bought it. It is oh so moist and light. It is not heavy and rich like most cakes, but has that light hint of sweetness combined with the juiciness of the strawberries and the creamy smoothness of the chocolate chips. In short, it is the perfect summer cake. It makes me think of teas with southern belles in a by gone time.

I have to devote a whole paragraph to the cinnamon rolls. They were one of the best things I have ever tasted.  An explosion of flavor that you have to experience for yourself. They were easy to make and you could probably substitute any fruit you want and have them turn out great. They are so good, and you guessed it, easy to make. These were a big hit with my husband and he has requested that I make them often. They are so sweet and full of that wonderful strawberry flavor.

I was on pinterest looking up strawberry recipes when I came across this link: http://doggydessertchef.com/2010/05/18/strawberry-banana-smoothie-biscuits/. It made me wonder if strawberries really are safe for pets so I did some research and according to www.naturipefarms.com  not only are strawberries awesome for your dog they also contain an enzyme that help whiten their teeth. Awesome, right? My pups absolutely loved their dog biscuits and the popsicles are a perfect treat on a hot summers day. However, these treats should be given in moderation.

Do you have a favorite recipe that uses strawberries or constructive criticism for me? Feel free to leave them in the comments, I would love to hear from you.

Peppermint Essential Oil

Peppermint essential oil has a variety of uses, from insect repellent to mental clarity. Peppermint is an oil I diffuse very often. When my allergies are acting up, I diffuse 2 drops each of peppermint, lemon, and lavender to promote respiratory health. When I need to concentrate, I diffuse peppermint.

  • Wake Up Call- mix with coconut oil and apply to the back of the neck and temples
  • GI Upset- add 1 drop to a glass of water, or massage some into your abdomen to promote GI health
  • DIY Icy Hot- use in a carrier oil to help relieve sore muscles
  • Congestion- diffuse peppermint, lemon, and lavender to improve respiratory health. If you can’t diffuse, rub a couple drops in your palms and breathe deeply
  • Dandruff? Add a few drops to your shampoo to help clear your scalp or make your own shampoo using your oils. Here is a link I found to a great recipe: http://www.homemademommy.net/2014/02/homemade-rosemary-peppermint-shampoo.html
  • Pest control- leave a peppermint soaked cotton ball anywhere you have ant problems
  • Sore feet- using a carrier oil and a few drops of oil, have your significant other massage your sore feet to ease the pain

Do you have another use for Peppermint oil? If so, leave it in the comments. I would love to learn new uses.

My Newest Obsession

life planner

I have recently discover the incredible awesomeness that is Erin Condren. I have always been a planner person, ever since middle school. I love having things laid out for me. It keeps me organized and that in turn keeps me happy. However once I graduated I stopped using planner because most are geared towards school. One day on Pinterest I discovered home management binders, and while I wasn’t entirely thrilled with how they were laid out I set about making one. I used it but it was so bulky, I couldn’t carry it around with me the way I needed to. Then I discovered Life Planners. Holy crap. Where have these been all my life?! They are so beautiful and customizable. I have gone planner crazy! I am addicted. Erin Condren’s Life Planners are amazing! They are so customizable and versatile. They fit almost any lifestyle or job. They are beautifully laid out and have tons of accessories and stickers to decorate to your hearts content.

I found some awesome deals on washi tape and stickers to decorate my planner. They were all 50 cents a piece! Wow it doesn’t get better than that! They match perfectly with April’s color scheme.

The Many Uses of Lemon Essential Oil

Lemon essential oil is a jack of all trades oil. It is great used on your skin, in your drinks or food, or as a cleaner. Most of Young Living’s starter kits come with lemon essential oil because it is so popular and capable of being used in many diverse ways. However Young Living’s oil is the only one I would ever ingest or use topically. Thanks to their “Seed to Seal” guarantee I can trust that I know exactly what I am getting. What is “Seed to Seal”? Well in the words of Young Living it is this, “At Young Living we take our stewardship of the planet and its inhabitants very seriously. We diligently scrutinize every step of our production process to bring you the purest products earth has to offer. We call it…Seed to Seal. It’s not a slogan—it’s our calling.” This is exactly why I chose to be a Young Living distributor over other essential oil companies. Now lets get on to the many uses of lemon oil.

  • Adhesive Removal- use 1-2 drops to remove any adhesive left behind such as glue, bandaids,  or crayons.
  • Degreaser- mix with liquid soap to remove grease and oil stains
  • Carpet Cleaner- 10-15 drops in a gallon of water in a steamer or carpet cleaner works wonders for your carpet. Make sure you spot test it first.
  • All purpose cleaner-  Mix 5-6 drops of oil with 1-2 cups water in a glass spray bottle. For extra cleaning power add 2 teaspoon apple cider vinegar.
  • Polish furniture- Mix one third cup apple cider vinegar and two third cups olive oil, mix well and then add 3 drops of lemon oil. Shake before each use.
  • Detox water- Add 1-2 drops to water to kickstart your metabolism and help flush toxins from your body.
  • Clear skin- Add a few drops to your favorite moisturizer for clear skin and a bright complexion. Avoid sunlight for 24 hours afterwards because lemon oil is light sensitive.
  • Fruit and Veggie wash- Add 2-3 drops to a sink full of water to remove waxy residue and to help fruit last longer.
  • Air freshener- Add 5-6 drops oil to 2 cups of water. Spray throughout your house for a fresh, clean scent that helps to neutralize odors.
  • Sanitize dishwasher or garbage disposal- Add 1-2 drops to your garbage disposal and wait 1 minute. Flush with warm water. Add 1-2 drops to detergent container to sanitize your washer.
  • Freshen laundry- Ever forget a load of clothes in the washer? Add a few drops to your laundry and it will freshen and brighten them.
  • Bug Repellent- 5-6 drops in 2 cups water. Spray anywhere you don’t want bugs.
  • Cooking- 7-8 drops of lemon oil equals 1 lemon.
  • Soft scrub cleaner- add a few drops of lemon to baking soda to make your own soft scrub cleaner.
  • Facial- Pamper yourself with this lemony facial. Mix 2-3 drops lemon with 1 tablespoon baking soda. Exfoliate. Rinse and put on your favorite moisturizer. It brightens your face and leaves your complexion nice and clear. Avoid sunlight 24 hours after applying as lemon is sunlight sensitive.
  • Disinfect a cutting board- Rub 2-3 drops on the board and then let it sit for a few minutes. Rinse with hot water and a gentle soap.
  • Make instant yummy lemonade for one or two people without the hassle of squeezing lemons or making it with the nasty artificial powder.
  • Uplifting Body Scrub- Mix 3 drops oil with 1 cup sugar.
  • Removes those hard to get rid of dry erase marker marks and stains.

Do you have a favorite way to use lemon? If so leave it in the comments, I would love to hear your ideas!

Thieves Essential Oil

After having my oils for a couple weeks now I couldn’t be more pleased with my purchase. I diffuse essential oils daily and use them in various ways. I will start my first post on explaining these oils  with one of my favorite oils, Thieves.

“Thieves® was created based on research about four thieves in France who covered themselves with cloves, rosemary, and other aromatics while robbing plague victims. This proprietary essential oil blend was university tested for its cleansing abilities. It is highly effective in supporting the immune system and good health.” – Young Living Website

How to use: For dietary, aromatic, or topical use. When using as a supplement, dilute one drop in 4 fl. oz. of liquid such as goat’s or rice milk. Diffuse for short periods of time (1/2 hour or less) in the work or home environment.Possible skin sensitivity. If pregnant or under a doctor’s care, consult your physician. Always dilute before applying to the skin or taking internally. Keep out of reach of children.

Ingredients: Clove† (Syzygium aromaticum), lemon† (Citrus limon), cinnamon† (Cinnamomum verum), Eucalyptus radiata† and rosemary† (Rosmarinus officinalis CT 1,8 cineol).

I diffuse Thieves when I start feeling a cold coming on, along with an Allergy Buster blend. (Not at the same time, in 2 hour increments.) Thieves smells amazing. It smells like fall time to me. Did your mother or grandmother ever peel oranges and combine the peels with cloves and cinnamon sticks in water? That is exactly what Thieves smells like. I love to apply a few drops to my steam mop to give my home a nice fresh, clean scent. I will be ordering Thieves cleaning products as soon as they come back into stock. I love it that much. I want to provide a chemical free environment for my dogs and children that come over.

You simply put 2 drops each of Lemon, Lavender, and Peppermint into your diffuser. I can tell a major difference with just one time. My nose is not stopped up and I can actually breathe. I can feel my sinuses draining, as yucky as that sounds, already. I am not going to lie, I was a bit wary of these oils. Surely they would not make that big a difference. I was WRONG! I am so excited to try different blends and some lotion recipes I found on pinterest. I will post more about these very soon as I get all the ingredients.

I signed as a wholesale member because the benefits are to amazing not to! You automatically get 24% off, the essential rewards program, and the benefits of having people sign up under you are great!

Wintry Days and Deep Thoughts

On a pipeline wife group I am in, a lady posted something that really got me thinking. This lady lost her husband suddenly to a heart attack, leaving her behind with a 9 year old son. In her post she talked about how we shouldn’t take for granted the things we have everyday. That we should relish the time we have together with our loved ones because we never know when they can be ripped away from us, no rhyme or reason. When you think about it that way, suddenly that little annoying habit isn’t so annoying now. That pet peeve you have about your significant other is just an endearing quirk. This lady posts updates on our group every so often, and each and every one of them break my heart. I just can’t imagine being in her position. My whole life revolves around my husband, everything I do I do with him in mind. The same goes for him. We are each other’s best friend and confidant. We each have our friends, but we would rather be with each other. We still have girls nights and guys nights but we hurry back home to each other. I hope and pray this never changes. I’m not saying we have a perfect marriage, there is no such thing, but we are in sync more often than not. We have squabbles and fights, but we have gotten better at recognizing when we are in the wrong and apologizing to each other. I try to remember that dear lady when we do fight, and this ends the argument better than being right or just walking away. I hope you didn’t mind reading such a sappy post, but this is what was on my mind this morning.

New adventures

So I have taken the plunge and ordered Young Living’s Premium Starter Kit. I am going to start selling essential oils as a supplement to our income. I am not only going to be selling essential oils but also making things for my Etsy shop. I will post a link when I get it up and running. I am very excited to start this new venture. I have also recently discovered Erin Condren Life planners so I will be purchasing one soon! I absolutely love being organized. I will post pictures when I get it in and how I set it up.

Baby Fever

Several of my family and friends are having babies this year and I’m kind of jealous. I really want a child even though now isn’t the best time for my husband and I. We want to get our financial situation in order, not that it’s in bad shape, and our house built. I have all these logic reasons in my head why we should wait but I still can’t help but want a child of my own. I’m terrified that we will wait to late and it will be impossible to have children. Or that we will be old parents and not able to enjoy our children. But my husband isn’t ready. I and but he’s not and I struggle with that daily. Is that selfish of me? I feel like it is. I can’t talk to him about it because he either gets mad or shuts me down. How do I deal with this? The only thing I can do is wait but sometimes I want a baby so bad it hurts. I dream about being pregnant often, usually at least once a week. I even have baby names and nursery themes already picked out. I’m just in my early twenties and have time but I just really want a child. I have over 400 pins on Pinterest related to baby stuff. My husband and I would both make great parents and I want my child to grow up close to his or her cousins like I did. But on the other hand there are a million things we want to do before we have children. we want to take cruises and see what we can of the world.

I just need to let go, and let God.
